CNC Machining FAQ
The questions behind a useful machining quote.
Clear answers begin with the drawing, material, quantity and end use. These are the points engineering and purchasing teams most often need to confirm before production.
Files & Quotation
Start with a complete technical baseline.
Which file formats should I send?
Send a 3D CAD file such as STEP together with a dimensioned 2D drawing when tolerances, threads, finishes or inspection points need to be controlled.
What information is needed for quotation?
Include material, quantity, finish, critical tolerances, cosmetic zones, required records and the target delivery date.
Can you review manufacturability before production?
Yes. The review may identify access limits, thin walls, deep features, tolerance conflicts, finishing allowances or inspection questions that should be resolved before the route is confirmed.
Production & Tolerances
Capability depends on the complete part.
Which materials can you machine?
Common projects use aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, copper and engineering plastics. Final availability is confirmed against the complete material callout and order quantity.
Can you support prototypes and repeat production?
Yes. The route is planned around the current quantity and likely repeat demand, with the confirmed revision and control requirements carried into later batches.
What tolerances can you achieve?
Tolerance capability depends on part size, geometry, material, datum strategy, process sequence and inspection method. Mark critical tolerances so they can be reviewed before quotation.
How is lead time determined?
Lead time is confirmed after reviewing material availability, quantity, machining complexity, secondary operations, inspection scope and the requested delivery route.
Finishing & Quality
Define what must remain controlled.
Can you coordinate surface finishing?
Finishing can be coordinated when the required process, color or appearance, cosmetic zones and any post-finish dimensions are specified during quotation.
Which inspection records are available?
Material documents and dimensional reporting can be discussed against the material, process and agreed order scope. Identify the dimensions that need recorded results.
How are finished parts protected for delivery?
Packing is planned around part geometry, critical edges, cosmetic surfaces and the delivery route, with labeling coordinated to the agreed order requirements.
Prepare Your RFQ
Four inputs improve every answer.
Released model & drawing
Make sure production and inspection use the same revision.
Complete material callout
Include grade, condition and any documentation needs.
Critical requirements
Mark functional tolerances, finish and cosmetic zones.
Quantity & target date
State prototype or batch quantity and repeat expectations.
Still Have a Question?
Send the drawing with the requirement behind it.
